DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

-In the forgery, the "quinas" in the inner shield (five inside each escutcheon) are rectangular while in the genuine stamp they are made round by the thinning of the lines above and below each quina;

-In the forgery, there are one or more colored lines joining the outer frame to the inner frame near the "U", and the white area in the ear of the left elephant is larger.

Note: I followed D.Davies in naming the forgery after a Mr.Brueckheimer who first identified it as so.

CARACTERISTICAS DISTINTIVAS:

-O escudo é grosseiro no falso e, em particular, as quinas são rectangulares, mas circulares no autêntico;

-No falso, existem linhas de tinta que partem do quadro em direcção à letra "U"; a área branca na orelha do elefante esquerdo é maior.

Nota: segui D.Davies na atribuição do nome da falsificação e as caracteristicas distintivas que escolhi são também indicadas por ele no livro "Forgeries of Portugal and Colonies".

NOTES: The origin is unknown. This is the roughest forgery of them all: the paper is different, the design is noticeably coarser, the forged stamp is wider and less tall than the original. It is known overprinted "Republica".
