DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FORGERY:

- the "G" in "ANGOLA" has a different shape than the original. The horizontal bar over the value does not touch the frame at right (it goes to the frame on both sides in the original- see image below). The word "REIS" starts at the center of the stamp (left of the center in the genuine stamps for values under 100 Reis). The crown is much less detailed and lacks the central pearl decoration.

All values to 100 Reis were forged. They usually bear the characteristic Spiro cancel as illustrated by the center stamp above..

A later print in a different paper shows even less detail. Most of the letter side shades in "ANGOLA" have disappeared and the bar over the value now does not touch the frame on either side (see image below- Type II) - 5 Reis value illustrated above.

CARACTERÍSTICAS DISTINTIVAS DO FALSO:

-o "G" na palavra "ANGOLA" tem uma forma diferente. A linha horizontal sobre o valor não toca no quadro do lado direito ou, em impressões cansadas, não toca em nenhum dos lados (Tipo II- ver pormenores abaixo). A coroa é pouco detalhada e as pérolas centrais não foram reproduzidas.

Foram produzidos falsos de todos os valores até 100 Reis. As impressões mais antigas (que são as mais comuns) ostentam frequentemente um carimbo característico às falsificações Spiro exemplificado acima no Tipo I.

ORIGIN: The lithographic firm of Gebruder Spiro (Spiro brothers), in Hamburg, were already producing stamp reproductions by 1864 and so must have been one of the first to issue the Angolan Crown stamps of 1870. They produced fac-simile of several hundred worldwide stamps until around 1880 and for a time even issued a philatelic magazine to advertise them.

Estas reproduções de má qualidade foram editadas pela firma alemã dos Irmãos Spiro nos anos 1870, possivelmente enquanto os originais ainda estavam em circulação. A firma editava catálogos e até uma revista filatélica onde anunciava as suas reproduções. No entanto a procura caíu e a produção foi encerrada à volta de 1880.
