Comentários: Este poema é um dos mais conhecidos de Mensagem. "Foste desvendando a espuma e a orla branca foi de ilha em continente..."- a espuma das ondas que acabam nas praias ou rebentam contra os rochedos marca as costas com uma orla branca. A frase anterior é uma forma poética de dizer que as costas foram sendo descobertas, primeiro as ilhas e depois os continentes, "até ao fim do mundo". "Quem te sagrou criou-te português"- porque, segundo Fernando Pessoa, Deus fadou Portugal para um magno destino e o Infante foi, por assim dizer, parte do "puzzle". "Do mar e nós, em ti nos deu sinal"- através de ti revelou-nos que o nosso destino era o Mar. "Cumpriu-se o Mar e o Império se desfez...falta cumprir-se Portugal"- cumpriu-se o destinado: o Mar foi desvendado; o Império Português (isto é, o controle das rotas oceânicas e a hegemonia no Índico) desfez-se. Pessoa pensa que Portugal está destinado à grandeza futura, e isso ainda não se cumpriu! |

An introduction to the poem: This poem, dedicated to Prince Henry, the Navigator, is one of the best known in Mensagem. The often-cited last verse is related with the main theme of the Poem: Portugal has a mission, the first part of which was the spearheading of the Discoveries (the unraveling of the foam, that went from island to continent). But its accomplishment as a nation is not yet complete for there is a second part to its mission: the showing of the way to the Fifth Empire! Prince Henry God
