DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

-In the forgery, the "quinas" in the inner shield (five inside each escutcheon) are rectangular while in the genuine stamp they are made round by the thinning of the lines above and below each quina;

-In the forgery, the "C" in "COMPANHIA" has a lower serif, while in the original there is none (this feature was almost certainly introduced on purpose, to separate it from the genuine stamp).

Note: I followed D.Davies in naming the forgery after a Mr.Seligmann who first identified it as so.

CARACTERISTICAS DISTINTIVAS:

-As quinas são rectangulares no falso, mas circulares no autêntico, sendo a forma determinada por um estreitamento das linhas horizontais sobre e sobre cada quina. Nos falsos estas linhas têm espessura constante;

-No falso, o "C" de "COMPANHIA" é rematado inferiormente por um serife ascendente que não existe no original (quase certamente trata-se de um erro propositadamente introduzido- para permitir aos falsificadores identificarem o seu produto entre originais?).

Nota: segui D.Davies na atribuição do nome da falsificação e as caracteristicas distintivas que escolhi são também indicadas por ele no livro "Forgeries of Portugal and Colonies".

ORIGIN: Unknown. The forgery must have been originally made after 1902 because it is perforated 111/2. It is found with a "Centenario da India" overprint of 1898 which is an anachronism and immediately marks any 111/2 stamp so overprinted as a forgery (although more often than not, only the overprint is forged.
