DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FORGERY:

-overall aspect very different. Shape of the head and neck different. Lettering green in the original stamp but whitish in the forgery. Decorations of the lower corners upturned in the forgery.

CARACTERÍSTICAS DISTINTIVAS DO FALSO:

-aspecto geral diferente. Forma da cabeça e pescoço diferentes, em particular a aresta inferior do busto. As letras, verdes no original, têm um aspecto esbranquiçado no falso. Os elementos decorativos dos cantos inferiores têm geometrias diferentes das do original.

ORIGEM: Englehardt Fohl foi um falsificador alemão em actividade desde cerca de 1870 até, pelo menos, 1906. Em 1898 uma tipografia da cidade onde Fohl vivia entrou em falência e os seus activos foram apreendidos às ordens do tribunal. Entre eles encontravam-se clichés de selos e mais de 100.000 exemplares de falsificações, incluindo estes selos de D.Pedro V. Os "selos" apreendidos foram marcados "Falsch" ("falso" em alemão) e distribuídos como oferta com revistas de filatelia. As falsificações não-sobrecarregadas devem ter sido vendidas antes dessa apreensão.

ORIGIN: Attributed to the German forger Englehardt Fohl, active from around 1870 to, at least, 1906. In 1898 over 100.000 of Fohl's forgeries (including this one) were confiscated when a faltering printer's shop was appropriated by the authorities. The forgeries were marked "Falsch" and offered as gifts with German philatelic magazines. The unbranded forgeries were presumably sold before 1898.
