An interesting detail in this image: the oil pan with a lower removable round panel or "window". This construction would be expensive and dangerous, as a leak from the joint would result in the loss of the full capacity of engine oil and ultimately destroy the engine. The main advantage would be the possibility of cleaning the sludge without removing the whole oil pan. Another simpler and safer design was finally adopted with a lateral drain plug, later to be transformed in a lower plug, similar to the one above (but without the window).
