Evolution of the early LEGO® thin plates

    ThPl vs01 (no logo on full studs)
vs01 (white, dark red, yellow?) introduced end 1954/55

molds for all plate types were made simultaneously and all will be treated together

The thin 2X8, 4X8, 6X8 and 4X8 round (right and left) were introduced in late 1954 or early 1955 and started being sold with the small houses and garage sets of 1955.A specific non-glossy plastic was used that does not show distortion.

The first type (vs01) is illustrated above. It has no logo on the studs and the so-called "LEGO dogbone logo" was inscribed at or near the center of the underside of each plate. The molds were not numbered.

The studs are full, as were all brick at this early time. The square recesses seen above were carved under the studs (and not into them) to save material and make the plates lighter.

Colours: white (seen above on the 4X8 plate), dark red and yellow (uncertain). Cream plates, like the example on top left, are discoloured white plates.

ThPl vs02 (no logo on hollow studs- waffle bottom I)
vs02 (white) introduced 1956/57

molds for all plate types were made simultaneously and all will be treated together

In faster injection cycles, the full studs often resulted in unsighty cave-ins of the tops. To avoid the concavity of the surface of the studs, new molds were machined to hollow them. This is the so-called "waffle bottom".

In this version (and only in this one) the corners and underside edges of the 4X8 and 2X8 plates are rounded.

The plates were marked, as before, with the dogbone logo at or near the center of the underside and now had a mold number inscribed nearby (the plate above left is nr. 1). The following mold numbers are known:

-4X8 round, right-sided - "1" and "3";

-4X8 round, left-sided- "2" and "4";

-2X8- "6", "7";

-4X8- "3" and "4";

-6X8- "1" and "2".

    ThPl vs03 (logo on base and on studs- waffle bottom II)
vs03 (white) introduced 1958/59?

molds for all plate types were made simultaneously and all will be treated together

This version differs from the previous on the engraving of the LEGO logo on every stud top.

Surprisingly, the base still carries the dogbone logo, suggesting that the mold cores were kept and only the cavities changed. That is not the case, as proven by the different mold numbers and sharp corners of the 4X8 plate.

    ThPl vs04 (no logo on base logo on studs- waffle bottom III)
vs04 ( white) introduced 1959/60?

molds for all plate types were made simultaneously and all will be treated together

The next mold series (produced around 1960?) is similar to vs03 but the dogbone LEGO logo is no longer used.
